Hawaii’s pristine beaches, tropical breezes and ocean views make it a popular destination for travelers and aspiring high-end homeowners alike.
When RHDC Studio was approached by a local developer to apply our unique design approach and environmental branding expertise into a new neighborhood of 59 multi-million dollar homes on the Big Island, we jumped at the chance to make our mark on a piece of paradise.
Our top priority for the concept was to bring the “outside in” by selecting colors, finishes and furnishings that complemented the homes’ panoramic ocean views. We also relied on our multidisciplinary design experience to think through backdrops and lines of sight that would intrigue future buyers looking to utilize their new residence as a reflection of their own personal brand.
As important as the design was, we knew deft communication between the developer, architect and marketing firm responsible for selling the homes was also crucial. As Lead Creative Director for the development, our role was take input from all parties and build a cohesive palette of options that would reflect the stunning outdoor landscape while taking into account the budget, timelines and priorities of our Client team.
Our approach to the interior design was to choose natural textures and finishes that reflected the beauty of the surrounding landscape without relying on stereotypical island themes like koa wood and palm fronds. Therefore coral, basalt and lava rock were introduced as more understated and contemporary choices for discerning buyers.
We’re no strangers to the power of collaboration, so whether we’re managing a retail project end-to-end, consulting for a hospitality Client or providing initial conceptual designs for a QSR Franchise, fostering and enhancing relationships is our number one priority. This understanding of the various perspectives of a project team allowed us to evolve the interior and exterior design to match both the Architect of Record’s layout and the Builder’s budgetary guidelines while still remaining advocates for the eventual buyers’ experience within the homes.
Our previous experience creating stylebooks for salons, spas and medical offices, as well as our deep knowledge of branding, allowed for easy collaboration as we worked with the development’s Marketing Team to curate the final finishes available to homeowners. That deliverable required a delicate mix of staying true to the design aesthetic, appealing to customers who want to put their own stamp on their homes and staying with the specification budget outlined by our project partners. The end result was a contemporary take on island finishes – and a happy development team!
The design process for these one-of-a-kind residences is nearly complete and model home construction will soon begin, so for the well-heeled among you there is still time to make a deposit!
And if you’re a developer in need of a fresh perspective for the conceptual or schematic design of your next project, rest assured we’re just a click or two away!
