Not Your Granny's Flat

Accessory Dwelling Unit

While their footprints may be small, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) often have big design goals, necessitating thoughtful and creative approaches to maximize comfort and livability.

For this project, located in the historic Kensington area of San Diego, CA, our Client sought a warm yet sophisticated style for the renovation of her existing “Granny Flat” that blended the classic elements of the neighborhood with her own vibrant personality.

Small Space, Big Personality

The  living area had only one small picture window, making it feel dark and enclosed. After removing a peninsula between the kitchen and living room to open the floor plan, we then installed a La Cantina sliding door to bathe the space in natural light. We also replaced the standard window in the kitchen with dramatic arched casement windows, which added light – and height – to the room.

A shiplap accent “art wall”, Dutchateau engineered oak flooring in a grayish-taupe and a pop of light sage color on the kitchen cabinets added to the contemporary yet classic look.

Classic. Comfortable. Curated.

One of the more exciting aspects of this renovation came during the site survey, when we learned that the ceiling had previously been dropped and the original architecture featured beatiful wooden beams. We revealed them and raised the ceiling height to 9′ 6″ in the process, adding to the airy feeling we were trying to achieve. Final accents like a honed marble backsplash and countertops, matte black hardware and recessed lighting throughout created the California casual environment our client wanted – classic but comfortable.

Brian and his team were a perfect fit for my renovation. Their understanding of layout, finishes and design details took my space to the next level and I couldn't be happier with the results!

Worthy of ADUlation!

Small Dwelling, Big Opportunity

Now that the design is complete, our Client is looking forward to finishing up construction so she can begin hosting out-of-town friends and family.

She’s also planning to see an immediate return on her investment though premium short term rentals for vacationers who want the full San Diego experience complete with indoor/outdoor living!
